굳게 맹세한 말을 뜻하는 시언(矢言)과 시국의 언론 또는 시대를 변론하는 언론을 의미하는 시언(時言) 그리고 한석경 할아버지의 존함인 시언(始彦). 한석경의 작품은 이렇게 여러 종류의 뜻을 내포하고 있는 ‘시언’ 사이에서 이미 흘러버린 시간의 문턱을 넘고자 한다. 한석경은 2016년부터 ‘북한’과 ‘한국 전쟁’과 연관된 시간적 잔해물을 조사하고 기록하여 이를 시각화하는 작업에 몰두하고 있다. 남북정상회담으로 남북 관계가 좋았던 2018년, 한석경 작가가 인터뷰를 하던 와중에, 통일을 염원하던 작가의 할아버지가 돌아가셨다. 작가는 〈시언: 시대의 언어〉를 통해 북한이 고향이었던 할아버지의 집안을 여전히 가득 메우고 있는 여러 종류의 것들에 대해 말한다. 손에 쥐어지지 않는 개인의 절절한 감정을 역사가 과연 어떻게 흩트려 놓았는가. 잊혔거나 멈춰버린 시간들, 끝나지 않은 감정에 대한 이야기들을 물질, 영상, 문서 등과 같은 흔적을 기반으로 작업해 오고 있는 한석경의 작업은 한국 전쟁에 대한 기억들이 세대를 통해 어떻게 전승이 되는지, 이러한 기억은 어떤 방식으로 서로 다른 세대의 단절을 기록하는지를 다루고 있다. 한석경의 〈시언: 시대의 언어〉를 통해 유약한 이 시간들이 아직 우리 곁에 있음을 다시금 인식할 수 있다.
Si-eon refers to a firm vow or the opinions representative of an era. It is also the name of Seok Kyung Han’s grandfather. Han's works attempt to cross the threshold of time that has flowed between the various definitions of 'Si-eon.' Since 2016, Han has been immersed in the work of examining, recording, and visualizing temporal remnants related to North Korea and the Korean War. In 2018, when inter-Korean relations eased due to the Inter-Korean Summit, Han’s grandfather, who had yearned for unification, passed away.
Through “Si-eon”: The Texts of His Time, the artist talks about various things that continue to fill her grandfather’s house. How has history scattered the intangible emotions and experiences of those before us? The forgotten or frozen times, and the stories of unfinished emotions, are told through traces of images, videos, documents, and more. Han’s work deals with her grandfather, whose hometown was in North Korea, and the question of how memories of the Korean War are passed on from one generation to another, and how such memories record the disconnections that exist between different generations. Han’s “Si-eon”: The Texts of His Time allows us to recognize that these vulnerable times are still with us.
한석경(b. 1982)은 동덕여자대학교 회화과와 홍익대학교 대학원 동양화과를 수학하였다. 공간 속에서 발생하는 물질을 소재 삼아 공간과 사물의 관계에 관해 연구하여 이를 평면 및 영상, 설치 작품 등 시각적 결과물로 구현하는 미술가이다. 특히 2016년부터는 분단 상황이라는 한국의 특수한 배경에 관심을 갖고 사회와 환경에 대한 작업을 하고 있다. 전시로는 개인전인 2019년 경기문화재단의 《시언: 시대의 언어》(DMZ 예술구락부 통/화곡동 컨테이너, 2019)와, 단체전으로는 2020년 한국 전쟁 발발 70년을 기리는 국립현대미술관 서울관의 《낯선 전쟁》(2020), 경기도미술관의 경기아트프로젝트인 《흰 밤 검은 낮》(2020)에 참여하였다. 국내외에서 개인전 6회 및 150여 회의 그룹전에 참여했으며, 타 장르의 예술가들과 공간에 관한 협업을 종종 하며, 연극, 영화, 교육, 출판, 여러 종류의 예술 프로젝트 등에서도 활동하고 있다.
Seok Kyung Han(b. 1982) explores the material that derives from a spatial area and further investigates relations between the object and space, then embodies it visually, creating work across diverse mediums including drawing, video, and installation. Since 2016, she has produced works that reflect the society and environment and integrates this narrative with the exceptional background of division in Korea. Han was selected as the solo exhibition artist for 2019 Gyeonggi Cultural Foundation Art Creation Promotion and presented SI-EON: The Texts of His Time. Han also, participated in the group exhibition Unflattening at the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art and White Night, Dark Day at the Gyeonggi Museum of Modern Art to commemorate the 70th year anniversary of the outbreak of the Korean War in 2020. She has held six solo exhibitions and 150 group exhibitions and performs spatial experiments with other artists from different genres, allowing her to participate in theater, movies, education, publishing, and many other art projects. She graduated from the Dongduk Women's University Painting department in 2008.
