DMZ Art & Peace Platform

‘Uni마루’는 2021년 DMZ 내에 설립되는 첫 복합 문화예술공간이다. 명칭은 통일을 뜻하는 영문 ‘Uni’와 플랫폼의 순수 한글인 ‘마루’가 합쳐진 것으로 통일을 위한 플랫폼이라는 의미를 가지고 있다. 이 공간은 2003년 남북이 도로와 철도를 연결한 후 2007년 현재의 경의선 남북출입사무소 건물이 완공될 때까지 남북간 원활한 인적, 물적 교류를 지원하기 위한 임시출경사무소로 사용되었다. 2021년도 봄, 남아있던 구)출경동 공간을 국립현대미술관(MMCA)을 설계한 민현준 건축가가 새로운 아트 스페이스로 리모델링 하였다. 건물의 외관은 ‘03년 준공당시 기본형태를 유지하여 남북연결의 역사성을 보존하였으며, DMZ에 위치한 ’장소의 의미‘와 ’중심적 문화예술공간‘이라는 특성을 강조하였다. 특히 옥상 개방을 통해 관람객들이 DMZ를 조망할 수 있게 하였고, 옥상 난간에 붉은 강판을 사용함으로써 ‘DMZ공간의 경계와 시간흐름’ 표현하였다. 또한 주변의 자연과도 조화를 이루도록 디자인 되었다. 넓은 내부는 예술전시뿐만 아니라 아카이브, 교육 및 다양한 행사를 할 수 있는 복합 문화예술 공간으로 사용될 예정이다.

UniMARU is the DMZ’s first art space established in 2021. A portmanteau of uni-(prefix meaning “one” for “unification”) and maru (meaning “platform”), the name refers to its mission to provide a platform for peaceful unification. Prior to UniMARU, the building housed a temporary customs and inspections office from 2003 to 2007. It was an important cross-point between the South and North until the InterKorean Transit Office was established.

In the spring of 2021, the space was renovated into a cultural center under the direction of Hyunjun Mihn (MPART Architects), who designed the National Museum of Modern Contemporary Art (MMCA) in Seoul. The exterior of the building maintains the original structure built in 2003 to remember the year’s reconnection of the roads and railroads at the inter-Korean border, while emphasizing its geographical significance and newfound role as a cultural nucleus. The renovation has added a steel façade, representing the liminality of time and space at the DMZ, and opened the roof to allow visitors to enjoy the view of the area. The new design is especially notable for its architectural harmony with the surrounding nature. The new capacious interior will be used for exhibitions, archives, and various public events.
