1972년 7·4 남북공동성명 이후 정부는 평화통일문제를 주요정책과제로 삼았으며, 이러한 시대적 상황을 배경으로 통일교육원은 1972년 5월 1일 통일부(당시 국토통일원) 소속기관으로 발족하였다. 창설 당시 명칭은 통일연구소였으나, 1986년 12월 통일연수원, 1996년 12월 통일교육원, 2021년 6월 국립통일교육원으로 개칭 되었다. 통일교육원은 남북 간 화해와 협력, 통일에 관한 교육을 실시하고 각급 학교·사회교육기관의 통일교육을 지원하는 업무를 목적으로 한다. 현재 국립통일교육원은 서울특별시 강북구 수유동에 위치하고 있으며, 주로 통일문제 및 국민정신교육에 관한 전문가와 교육자를 훈련·양성하고, 통일에 대비한 정부기관, 공공기관, 사회단체 요원에 대한 교육을 실시한다.

The National Institute for Unification Education is an organization affiliated with South Korea’s Ministry of Unification, founded in 1996. The Institute is responsible for providing educational content regarding unification that can be understood by everyone, regardless of age, gender, or political orientation, under the Unification Education Support Act. Its mission is to foster the right values and attitudes toward unification among citizens, both at home and abroad.
